Respite Care

  • Check out possibilities for having your loved one stay a few, or several, days at a facility. Some assisted living facilities (or hospice facilities if appropriate) offer this, and if your loved one has been living with you, you get a few days break.  Again, starting earlier in their decline allows you, and them, to get used to going somewhere to give you a break, and they then get to return “home.”
    • It’s ideal for you to tour the facility before you arrange the stay. If it doesn’t feel right to you or for your loved one, find another option.

  • Adult Day Centers or Senior Centers for a half day a few days a week has many benefits.  They get socialization, you get time to run errands, breathe, etc.
    • If the cognitive decline requires someone to be with your loved one, remember you can leverage your team to take them there.
